As of the merger with Suki but with 2003 population estimates, the city has an estimated population of 41,992 and a density of 88.5 persons per km² (229 persons per sq mi). The total area is 474.23 km² (183.1 sq mi). The city is suffering from low population dropage like the city Miyakonojo.

History

The city was founded on April 1, 1950. On March 20, 2006 the village of Suki merged with the city, roughly doubling the city's size.

A planned merger of municipalities will be implemented on March 23, 2010. Two municipalities in Nishimorokata District, Nojiri and Takaharu, will merge into Kobayashi. Nishimorokata District will cease to exist.[1]

In Kobayashi there are now 8 middle Schools and 10 elementary schools after the inclusion of Suki and Uchiyama's middles and elementary schools.
